After-School Gardening Club (Years 3–6)

A hands-on, curriculum-linked club where children learn practical gardening skills, care for the school environment, and explore sustainable growing — all in a calm, supportive setting.

🌱

From planting seeds to nurturing seedlings and improving our school grounds, children will experience the full “grow, care, learn” journey across the term. Everything is provided, and children will enjoy a simple snack during each session.

Who it’s for

  • Children in Years 3–6

  • Children who enjoy practical learning and working as part of a team

  • Children who are happy to follow instructions, use tools safely, and get hands-on (including getting a little muddy!)

Places are limited to keep the club purposeful, calm, and well-supported.

What children will do

Activities are seasonal and designed to extend school learning through real-life gardening. Children will:

  • Sow seeds and grow flowers/plants from scratch

  • Plant, water, and care for seedlings over time

  • Learn about soil, composting, pollinators, habitats, and the seasons

  • Label, observe, and (where appropriate) record plant growth

  • Help keep the school grounds looking welcoming and well cared for

From time to time, children will also:

  • Bring home plants or seeds to nurture with family

  • Take part in preparing for spring/summer plant sales

Curriculum links (how this extends learning)

This club is designed as a curriculum-linked enrichment opportunity, supporting and extending learning from:

  • Science: plant lifecycles, habitats, seasonal change, ecosystems, sustainability

  • Geography: environments, weather, local outdoor spaces

  • PSHE: teamwork, responsibility, patience, confidence, wellbeing

It’s a practical way for children to apply classroom learning in a real setting.

Wider opportunities and real-world links

  • To enrich the club, we’ll make links (where appropriate) to:

  • The National Trust and their “50 things to do before you’re 11¾”

  • The Woodland Trust

  • The Forestry Commission

  • Seasonal gardening inspiration connected to events such as the Chelsea Flower Show

We also plan to invite occasional guest speakers to talk to the children about gardening and caring for the environment.

Plant sales and supporting the school community

Plants grown by the children will be sold during spring and summer plant sales.

Money raised will be:

  • Reinvested into the club (seeds, compost, tools, and resources), and

  • Donated to the school PSA, supporting the wider school community

Children love seeing their hard work turn into something meaningful — from seed to sale.

Quick questions (FAQ)

Will children be outside every week? We aim to work outdoors as much as possible. In poor weather, sessions may adapt to sheltered tasks or indoor planning/seed prep where appropriate.

Do children need gardening experience? No — beginners are welcome. Everything is taught step-by-step.

Is the club suitable for children who don’t like getting messy? Gardening can involve soil and outdoor work. This club suits children who are happy to take part practically.
